Description:
This workshop explores the role of creative therapies—art, music, storytelling, and movement—in helping Black clients navigate grief and loss in culturally affirming ways. Participants will examine unique grief responses within Black communities, including the impact of historical trauma, collective grief, and cultural mourning practices. Through an interactive discussion, attendees will gain practical strategies for incorporating creative therapies in group work, fostering connection, resilience, and emotional expression..
Learning Objectives:
Attendees will:
1. Explore the Role of Creative Therapies in Grief Processing – Discuss how art, music, storytelling, and movement-based therapies can help Black clients navigate grief and loss in a culturally affirming way.
2. Address Culturally Specific Grief Experiences – Highlight unique grief responses within Black communities, including the impact of historical trauma, collective grief, and cultural expressions of mourning, and how creative therapies can provide healing spaces.
3. Provide Practical Strategies for Group Work – Equip attendees with tangible creative therapy techniques and group facilitation strategies that foster connection, resilience, and emotional expression among Black clients.

Brianne “Brie” Overton is the Chief Clinical Officer of Experience Camps, a national nonprofit that provides no-fee, clinically informed programs for kids who have experienced the death of a parent, sibling or primary caregiver – as well as resources and advocacy so all grieving children can live a life rich with possibility. Brie received her MA in Thanatology from Hood College, her M.Ed in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from University of Missouri - St. Louis, and is a doctoral candidate in counseling at the University of Missouri - St. Louis. She has spent 17 years in the field of thanatology providing grief education, support, counseling, death education, suicide prevention and intervention, and consultation.
