Groups Work: Lighting Trails of Hope after the Storm

Grupos: Iluminando senderos de esperanza tras la tormenta

Just think of winter in the Caribbean but not leaving the US.  The best of all worlds where we come together as a group worker community in Dorado, a community near San Juan, Puerto Rico. ASGW will hold its biennial conference at the Embassy Suites Dorado del Mar Beach Resort, in beautiful surroundings, while also meeting our ethic of serving our community by helping Puerto Rico recover in the aftermath of the devastating hurricanes.  Be prepared for a conference that's all about groups, group work, and working in the community. "Una comunidad solidaria!"

ASGW Special Initiatives Committee Service Day

Exciting news from ASGW’s Special Initiatives Committee! You are being invited to apply to participate in a one- or two-day service project in Puerto Rico prior to the start of this year’s ASGW Conference. These service projects are intended to bring this year’s conference theme to life, allowing participants to use their culturally-responsive group work skills to support Puerto Ricans in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.

All ASGW members are invited to apply; however, those demonstrating a passion to serve the community and a commitment to engaging in cultural humility will be given preference. Volunteer spaces for both projects will be quite limited, so you are encouraged to apply soon!

The deadline for applying to serve in either/both of the service projects described below is Friday, October 18, 2019. Notification of acceptance will be emailed by Friday, November 1, 2019.

Description of Service Opportunities:

All Hands and Hearts Rebuilding Project (Wednesday, January 29, 2020): This initiative will take place in Yabucoa, PR in collaboration with All Hands and Hearts, an organization that effectively and efficiently addresses the immediate and long-term needs of communities impacted by natural disasters. Service activities will involve physical labor, potentially including resealing damaged roofs and other services as needed.

Ines Maria Mendoza School Outreach Project (Thursday, January 30, 2020): This initiative will take place at a PreK-12 school in Caimito, PR, where ASGW volunteers will collaboratively provide services to students, teachers, and staff. The focus of this project will be tailored to meeting needs and goals identified by school staff, specifically career education workshops, college readiness prep, and skill building activities for adolescent youth.

For questions regarding these services opportunities or the application process, please contact Special Initiatives Committee Co-Chair, Dr. Brittany Pollard, at bpollard@iup.edu.

The conference will start on Thursday at 5 pm with a welcome reception and an intro to Puerto Rico event. Friday and Saturday will offer full days of varied interactive learning sessions where counselors can gain important CE's. Tuesday and Wednesday will offer pre-conference service projects and learning intensives.  Check back here soon for more information about session specifics.

The Embassy Suites Dorado del Mar Beach Resort is in the town of Dorado, approximately 1 hour from San Juan.  ASGW has secured an excellent rate for this location of $196.33 per night per room plus tax which includes 2-room suite accommodations, breakfast, and evening receptions  ($159 per night); resort fee ($35 per day) covering reduced restaurant rates, wifi, and beach supplies; and housekeeping ($1 per day) and bellman gratuities ($4 per person per stay).  Make your reservation here soon, as there is a limited block of rooms at this rate.  The pre-and post-conference days that were available at this rate are already full! Secure your conference days soon, and consider time for self-care by extending your stay at the prevailing rate.  Exploring Puerto Rico is so worth it! Small-group tour style ground transportation to and from the airport will be available for purchase for $10 each way/$17 round trip per person. Instructions for this purchase will be included in pre-conference communications during November and December. Check out Discover Puerto Rico to see the rich exploration opportunities.

ASGW will provide scholarships to help local counselors and groupworkers attend the 2020 conference.  Add on a t-shirt to your registration and proceeds will make more resources available to these local heroes.  Can't attend the conference?  Support Puerto Rican counselors' and groupworkers' continuing education by purchasing a t-shirt here.
