Leading Groups with Adolescents
Dr. Janice DeLucia-Waack, Dr. Allan Segrist
This DVD features an actual group with adolescents. The group was designed as a psychoeducational group. That is, it was intended to focus on skill development for the prevention of problems and the promotion of healthy development. As described by DeLucia-Waack (2006), psychoeducational groups "teach specific skills and coping strategies in an effort to prevent problems; such skills and strategies might include anger management, social skills, self-esteem, assertiveness, and making friends" (p. 11). The group was not scripted and members were not made aware of the specific topics or activities that would occur in the group prior to the beginning of the group itself. The group was conducted and filmed over two consecutive days. For this reason, the group differed from a typical group in that there was not a sequence of sessions each with an opening and a closing as there would be in a more traditional group structure.
