Leading Groups with Adolescents (2 ½ hours) © 2006
Dr. Janice DeLucia-Waack, Dr. Allen Segrist
This DVD features an actual group with adolescents (10th graders). The group was designed as a psychoeducational group to teach skills in an effort to prevent problems and promote healthy development and relationships. Such skills and strategies might include anger management, social skills, self-esteem, assertiveness, and making friends The group is co-led by two expert group leaders. It captures a psychoeducational group unfolding through the initial stage with getting to know each other and goal setting activities to teaching skills such as emotion management, assertiveness, and conflict resolution, and then to termination with saying goodbye and identifying what was learned and how group was helpful. You will learn skills and techniques from viewing the group leaders and also in their discussion and reflections on what they were trying to do with Dr. Horne. At the end the students themselves also reflect on what they learned about themselves and the group process.
Dr. Gerald Corey, renowned author of many best selling group books writes about this DVD:
DeLucia-Waack, Segrist, and Horne's (2007) DVD illustrates the value of a psychoeducational group for high school students. The DVD portrayed a structured group and demonstrates how structured exercises can facilitate interaction, yet the leaders showed flexibility and encouraged members to interact with each other. This DVD with adolescents also illustrates the value of preparation in forming a group, ways of developing group ground rules, icebreaker activities, how to encourage members to make connections, and how to assist members in identifying what they learned. Psychoeducational groups have a different purpose than therapy groups, yet a similar process unfolds in both types of groups.

She is currently on the advisory board for the Jean M. Alberti Center for the Prevention of Bullying Abuse and School Violence, newly created at the University at Buffalo, SUNY.
